People hear the call to serve, but wait… its for Kids Church? Their hearts start to beat super fast, sweat breaks out and the nearest exit looks good right about then. Why is that?
I reckon it is because people think you need to be LOUD, brightly dressed, always smiling with the ability to execute awesome dance moves (anyone else think this sounds just like the Disney Channel?)
While all of the above is helpful, it is certainly not necessary to be a great volunteer at City Kids (but just so we’re clear on this, I can do all of the above…kidding!)
A wonderful way Lance de Ruig, an inspiring kids pastor now leading a church in France, spoke about serving in Kids Church is this: “It’s not a case of ‘I’ll see if I have time to help out’. We get this free gift of salvation, this grace and we have to give it away by equipping the saints. Not just adult saints but kids as well. We need to pass it on. This needs to be a corporate burden.”
I add that we need to realize that God will equip us if we just step out and serve. And serve we must.
It is written in black and white for us to see and obey:
‘As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace…whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies — in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.’ 1 Peter 4:10 ESV
So do you need to be THE ETERNAL EXTROVERT to serve at City Kids?
Well, I’ll use myself as an answer to this question.
I actually love to be at home, sitting in a quiet spot, reading a book, ALONE…My favorite joke is that ‘I don’t like to go outside as its ‘too people’ out there’. Are you surprised? Yep the City Kids Leader is an introvert with a capital I in flashing neon.
But isn’t that just God’s way… If it were just up to me, I wouldn’t have the nerve to do it. But God in His awesome grace, stirred my heart and when I stepped out to serve (shaking in my boots), He gave me the ‘gumption’ I needed.
I’ve come to realize that everything I do at City Kids is about God, for God and because of God and for His youngest kids to know Him eternally. Serving here is not to showcase who I am or my own talent, but to equip these mini saints so they can KNOW God.
Being an introvert leading a Kids Church shows that its all Gods doing – His timing, purpose and plan coming together for these kids that I teach, these volunteers that I get to lead. Remember that old saying: ‘God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called’? Well that is the honest truth for me.
I was not equipped when I started but He equipped me when I stepped out into serving His little ones and it is God who is doing all the awesome work you see every Sunday.
So this is what makes a Great Volunteer 101:
Stepping out in faith, giving your time and then knowing that it is all about Him, because of Him and for Him. He was, after all, the very first real Volunteer.
